Two to three thick coats of lacquer, each mixed with plaster, are then applied in sequence. Between every coat, the urn is rinsed with water. Colour goes on next, followed by a layer of varnish, then a second varnish stage. Finally, the surface is smoothed and polished by hand. That silver-grey finish is the result of every individual layer that preceded it, and it shows.
