From clay to a hand-glazed urn

The urn is made by an artist in an artisan process involving several stages. Natural clay is first carefully kneaded and shaped. Depending on the form and technique used, this can be done by hand, on a potter’s wheel or with a mould and slip clay. The ceramic is then allowed to dry slowly, sometimes for several days, to reduce the risk of cracking or distortion.

Once dry, the urn undergoes a first firing at approximately 900 °C. The blue/brown/grey glaze is then applied by hand. During a second firing at around 1,200 °C, the glaze fuses with the ceramic surface, creating a sturdy, durable and water-resistant finish.

Care and placement indoors

Ceramic is durable and stable, but it can break if dropped or subjected to a hard impact. Place the urn indoors on a dry, level and stable surface. Clean the surface only with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to help preserve the glaze as well as possible.
