The crack that holds what hasn't gone
Some objects earn their place in a room. This ceramic cremation urn is one of them. Running across the surface is a gold-coloured crack, and above it, a gold heart worked into the design. Neither is accidental. The crack draws on the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, the idea that a break is not something to hide but something to honour. The fracture is the story. The gold makes it visible.
How this urn is made
Production begins with a plaster mould, clamped shut and filled with liquid clay. As the clay builds against the mould walls to the required thickness, the excess is poured away. Once the clay has dried sufficiently, the mould is removed. Separate elements, including the heart, are then assembled and joined. The seam is smoothed by hand before the piece goes into the kiln, where it is fired at over 1,000 degrees. At that temperature, clay becomes ceramic. The glaze is applied in layers, each one contributing to the depth of colour you see in the finished urn.
What this design carries
If you are looking for something that reflects a life fully lived, the symbolism here is honest rather than decorative. The gold crack does what grief does: it shows that something was broken, and in doing so it reveals the depth of the bond you shared. The heart marks the centre of that. Not as ornament, but as statement. This is an urn for ashes that holds meaning in its making.
Suitable for use with or without an ash bag
The urn accommodates ashes placed directly inside or within an ash bag, whichever feels right for you. It is designed for indoor use, and works best on a surface you have chosen deliberately, somewhere that belongs to the person you are remembering.
Practical care and placement
Ceramic of this quality is robust, but it asks for a stable, fixed position indoors. Keep it away from moisture and avoid placing it where temperatures fluctuate significantly, as either can affect the glaze surface over time. A non-slip surface beneath the base will help. Treated with ordinary care, the colour and texture of this funeral urn will remain unchanged for years.
Building the space around it
The urn sits well as part of a considered arrangement. A photograph laid flat nearby, a candle, or a small object that belonged to the person you've lost can each add to the space without competing with it. Give the whole thing room to breathe. Personalisation is also available: an engraving plate can be added, carrying a name, a date, or a short phrase that means something to you.
