Two lives, one place

Sometimes you are looking for something that keeps two people together, even now. The 'Path of life' is a companion cremation urn designed to hold the ashes of two people alongside one another, where neither presence overshadows the other. That balance is built into the design itself.

A design with something to say

The urn is formed from two distinct elements: an arch and a sphere, placed side by side. The arch represents the path a life takes. The sphere represents the person who walked it. Together they tell a legible story about the bond you shared, not an abstract composition but a considered one. The arch holds the ashes. The sphere stands beside it as a visual anchor, giving the second person their own place within the whole.

Corten steel: a material that changes with time

Corten steel is not ordinary steel. It is a metal alloy combining iron with copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium. That composition allows the material to form a protective oxide layer naturally, with no paint or coating required. The rust colour you see is not a sign of neglect. It is the result of a controlled chemical process that actually strengthens the steel over time. Working with corten demands real precision: the sheet material is shaped by bending and welding, or cut using laser or waterjet techniques. The clean, considered lines of 'The path of life' reflect that exactness.

The colour shifts, the protection holds

Our urns are treated to accelerate the oxidation process so that the protective layer forms sooner. In the early stages, the surface has a vivid orange-brown colour. Over months and years that deepens into a richer, darker brown tone. Some variation in colour and occasional light marks are normal during this period and settle as the patina matures. If you need to clean the surface, water and mild soap are all that is required.

Practical guidance for indoor placement

Placing this urn for ashes indoors gives you a stable, controlled environment and means the patina develops at its own pace without external variables. The urn is suitable for use with or without an ash bag.

What to know about the material and placement

Corten steel is worked exclusively as flat sheet, shaped through bending, welding or cutting. When positioning the urn, avoid any configuration where water could collect in hollows or cavities, as corrosion will continue to develop in standing moisture. If you notice a thin layer lifting from the surface in the early stages, this is the mill scale formed during production, not damage to the piece itself. Any surface marks will repair over time as a fresh rust layer forms, though the colour cycle will begin again from that point. Porous stone surfaces and stainless steel should not be placed in direct contact beneath corten steel, as both can cause complications with the patina or with surface transfer.

If you would like to personalise this companion urn, an engraving plate can be added, carrying a name, a date or a short phrase for one or both of the people it commemorates.

If you have questions about placement or would like to talk through what works best for your situation, we are happy to help you think it through.
