Two lives, one tree
Some urns hold ashes. This one holds something more specific: the fact that two people shared a life. The 'Tree of life' companion cremation urn is designed around that bond from the ground up.
What the design means
The tree represents the path each person walked. The two arching forms rising from a single base depict departure, plainly and with dignity. Together they make a complete shape, just as the two people you are remembering made a complete partnership. It is a considered piece of design, not decorative for its own sake.
Corten steel and stainless steel: the materials
This urn for ashes is made from corten steel in combination with stainless steel. Corten steel is a metal alloy of iron combined with copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium. That composition causes the surface to form a dense oxide layer, which then shields the metal beneath from further oxygen exposure. Oxidation slows significantly as a result, so the steel protects itself over time. No painting or coating is required. The forms in this design are produced by bending and welding sheet metal, a process that demands precision, and you can see that precision in the clean, tight lines of the finished piece.
Designed to hold the ashes of two adults
This cremation urn has the capacity to hold the ashes of two adults, with or without an ash bag. Two people who spent their lives together need not be separated. That is not a given with most urns, and it is exactly what this design provides.
Practical information about care and placement
Corten steel is a considered material that rewards a little thought about where and how it is placed. Here is what you need to know.
How the colour changes over time
The urn is treated during production to begin the oxidation process. The rust-coloured surface you see on arrival is just the start. Over the weeks and months that follow, the material develops a deeper, denser oxide layer. The colour moves from a bright orange-brown towards a richer, darker brown. In the early stages, a loose surface layer may flake away slightly. This is the mill scale that forms during the manufacture of the sheet steel, and it is entirely normal. Any patches or colour variation during this settling period will resolve naturally. Cleaning is straightforward: water and mild soap are all you need. If the surface is scratched or damaged, a new oxide layer will form, though the colour development in that area may differ slightly from the surrounding patina as it catches up.
Indoor use and surface protection
This urn is made for indoor use. Rust water can run from the base and may stain the surface beneath it, so placement matters. Set the urn on a metal or wooden stand or plateau that can tolerate some discolouration. Avoid placing it directly on porous stone surfaces or on stainless steel, as both are susceptible to rust staining.
A lasting place for the bond you shared
The Tree of life is not decorative in the conventional sense. It expresses something: that two lives were joined, and that the joining deserves to be marked. The colour deepens gradually over time, the material shifts and settles, and there is something true in that for grief as well. Giving this urn a place in your home is a way of keeping that connection visible.
Personalisation
If you would like to make the urn more specific to these two people, consider a matching plateau or plinth to sit beneath it. An engraving plate can be added to carry names, dates or a short phrase, so the piece becomes not only a symbol but a clear reference to this particular partnership.
