Two waves, one life
Loss rarely feels simple. It holds grief and gratitude at the same time, presence and absence in the same breath. The Wave cremation urn gives that contradiction a physical form: two opposing waves that belong together precisely because they move in different directions.
What corten steel is, and why it matters
Corten steel is an iron-based alloy containing copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium. What sets it apart from standard steel is the oxide layer it builds on its own surface. This layer is not cosmetic. It seals the material beneath from oxygen, slowing further oxidation significantly, which means the urn never needs painting or surface treatment. The Wave is formed by bending and welding flat sheet corten steel, a process that requires both precision and a close understanding of how the material behaves under stress.
A colour that changes over time
The orange-brown tone you see now is not the finished state. Corten steel is a living material. Our urns are treated to accelerate the oxidation process, so the protective layer begins forming sooner. In the early weeks, a thin surface layer may flake slightly. This is a normal part of the process, not damage. Over time the colour deepens and settles into a rich, earthy tone that continues to develop gradually.
Finding the right place for it at home
The Wave is designed for indoor use, which gives you real freedom in choosing where it sits. A windowsill, a bookshelf, a quiet corner of a room you use every day. The urn for ashes is substantial enough to hold its presence without demanding attention.
Practical points for indoor placement
Corten steel is strong and long-lasting, but a few straightforward precautions will help protect your surfaces and keep the urn looking its best. In the first few weeks, the oxidation process releases colour that can leave faint marks on light or porous surfaces, so place the urn on a waterproof or washable mat or tray. Avoid placing it directly on stainless steel or porous stone, as these materials can react chemically with the corten surface. Cleaning is simple: a damp cloth with a mild soap solution is all that is needed. If the surface is scratched or chipped, corten steel repairs itself by forming a new oxide layer over the affected area. The colour in that spot may temporarily differ from the surrounding patina before it blends back in over time. The urn can be used with or without an ash bag, depending on what feels right to you.
The meaning behind the form
The name Wave is considered, not decorative. Two opposing waves represent the contradictions that mark a life: joy and sorrow, presence and absence, the ordinary and the extraordinary. If you are looking for a funeral urn that reflects something of the complexity of a person's life, and of the bond you shared with them, this form offers that quietly. Not through elaborate detail, but through the simplicity of the line itself.
Personalisation
If you would like to personalise the urn, an engraving plate can be added, carrying a name, a date or a short phrase that meant something to you both. Take your time with the decision. There is no rush.
If you have questions about placement, personalisation or anything else, we are happy to talk it through with you at whatever pace suits.
