When butterflies mean something more
Butterflies have a way of appearing when you least expect them. For many people who are grieving, that feels less like coincidence and more like recognition, something that continues. The 'Butterflies' cremation urn in corten steel is made for those who want to give that connection a real, physical place at home.
What corten steel actually is
Corten steel is not ordinary metal. It is an alloy of iron combined with copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium. That combination causes the oxide layer that forms on the surface to become dense enough to protect the material beneath it. Rust, in this case, is not damage. It is the protective skin. Each urn is treated to accelerate this process, so the characteristic deep orange-brown colour is already present when it arrives with you.
The butterfly, and what it holds
The butterfly is a symbol of transition. For you, that word carries a specific weight: the shift from presence to memory, from seeing someone to carrying them. The butterflies on this urn are set within an oval form, a shape with no beginning and no end, chosen deliberately to reflect the bond that does not stop. If you would like to add a name, a date or a short phrase, personalisation is available. Get in touch to talk through what is possible, and this urn becomes something more than an object.
Practical things worth knowing
Corten steel has particular properties that are useful to understand before you choose it. Knowing them means you can care for the urn well and feel confident in your decision.
For indoor use
This urn for ashes is designed for use indoors. In a dry indoor environment, the oxide layer remains stable and the finish holds its character over time. The urn is suitable for use with or without an ash bag.
How the surface develops
In the first few weeks after you receive the urn, the rust layer is still settling. A thin outer layer may flake slightly; this is the mill scale that forms during production and is a normal part of the process. The colour starts as a vivid orange-brown and deepens and evens out over time. Any variation or small patches in the early weeks will resolve on their own.
Cleaning and surface damage
The urn can be cleaned simply with water and mild soap. If the surface is scratched or marked, a new oxide layer will form naturally over the affected area. Bear in mind that the colour development in that spot will restart from the beginning, so there may be a slight variation against the surrounding patina for a period.
What to avoid
Do not place corten steel directly on porous stone surfaces or in contact with stainless steel, even indoors. In rare cases, rust water can leave faint marks on the surface beneath the urn. A coaster or protective mat prevents this entirely.
If you are not sure whether this urn is right for what you have in mind, please do get in touch. There is no pressure, and we are happy to talk it through with you at whatever pace feels right.
