The clay is cast, left to dry, and carefully smoothed by hand. It then goes into the kiln for a first firing at 900°C. Only after that is the glaze applied, before the urn returns to the kiln at 1,050°C. That second firing is what gives the satin grey its distinctive depth: not glossy, not flat, but something precisely between the two.
