A quiet presence that holds its shape for years
Choosing where a person rests is one of the most considered decisions you will make. The 'Oval butterflies' stainless steel funeral urn offers something permanent: a clean oval form with a delicate butterfly motif that will look exactly as it does today, years from now.
Grade 316 stainless steel: why the material grade matters
Not all stainless steel performs equally. This cremation urn is made from RVS 316, an alloy of iron, chromium, nickel and carbon that has a measurably higher resistance to corrosion than the more common 304 grade. That distinction is meaningful whether the urn is placed outdoors, in a damp garden setting, or in a coastal environment. The brushed surface finish is a considered detail: the direction of the grain causes light to reflect differently depending on the angle, giving the metal a nuanced sheen that shifts through the day. Stainless steel requires no special treatment to maintain its appearance.
Handcrafted in the Netherlands
This urn is made by hand in the Netherlands by specialist craftspeople, using the best available materials. Precision at this level takes time, and the lead time for this urn is four to six weeks. In practice it is often ready sooner, but to avoid disappointment six weeks is the figure we communicate. If you need a clearer picture of the current lead time, get in touch via chat or email and you will receive a straight answer.
The butterfly motif, and what it carries
The butterfly on this urn is not decorative in a superficial sense. It represents transition: the moment something releases its first form and continues in another. If the person you are remembering had a connection to nature, to freedom, or to a kind of quiet resilience, this motif holds that meaning honestly. It is also a design that ages with dignity, neither fashionable nor fussy.
Laser engraving: personal and precise
Personalisation is available on this urn through laser engraving. A computer-guided beam works directly into the steel surface with considerable accuracy, rendering images in greyscale or colour. The sharpness of the result depends on the resolution of the file you provide: a high-quality image produces a genuinely striking outcome. You upload your chosen image at the point of ordering. A portrait photograph combined with initials or a date is one approach that gives the urn a fully individual character. If you would like to discuss what works well before ordering, we are happy to help you think it through.
Durability, closure and practical reassurance
The seal on this urn is airtight and built to withstand considerable tension. Ashes can be placed directly into the urn or within the supplied ash bag; all accessories for filling and sealing are included. Because this urn is made from grade 316 stainless steel, it is robust enough that placing ashes directly inside is entirely appropriate. That said, if there is any possibility that the ashes may need to be moved to another location in future, using the ash bag is the more practical choice. The urn carries a ten-year guarantee, and there is a thirty-day return period with no conditions attached. If the urn ever needs to be reopened for any reason, our technicians can do that for you.
Filling the urn
All accessories for filling and sealing are included. The process is straightforward, and the urn can also be filled by the crematorium or funeral director if you prefer.
- Place the ash bag into the urn, leaving part of it outside the opening to act as a funnel, then pour the ashes in
- Seal the ash bag with the supplied cable tie and tuck it fully into the opening; if no ash bag is used, a funnel is recommended to avoid spillage
- Ensure the inner seating edge is completely free of dust, grease and moisture using the cloth provided
- Remove the protective film from the lid and position it carefully against the rim of the opening
- Press the lid into place in a single firm motion until it sits flush; a correctly seated lid will not protrude above the body of the urn
Questions you may have
Practical certainty matters when you are making this kind of decision. Here are answers to the questions people most often ask about this urn for ashes.
What is the guarantee?
This urn carries a ten-year guarantee.
Can I return it if it is not right?
Yes. There is a thirty-day return period on all our memorial products, with no conditions attached.
Do I have to use an ash bag?
No. Ashes can be placed directly into this urn or in the supplied ash bag. Because the urn is made from grade 316 stainless steel and the seal is fully airtight, direct placement is entirely safe. If you think the ashes may eventually need to be transferred elsewhere, the ash bag gives you that flexibility.
Can I commission a custom design?
Yes. If you have a particular shape or design in mind, it is possible to work with us to develop something specific. Send a sketch, a photograph or a reference and we will come back to you with a proposal and a quote.
If you have a question about engraving options, lead time or anything else, get in touch via chat or email and we will give you a clear, straightforward answer.
