Free as a bird, always with you
Sometimes words are not what you need. You need something you can hold. This handmade, hand-painted keepsake urn from Royal Delft offers exactly that: a considered, lasting tribute to someone you loved.
A piece of craft with a particular purpose
The 'Free as a bird' mini urn for ashes has an organic, handheld form that is both striking and understated. It sits naturally in a home without demanding attention, yet it carries quiet meaning. The base is sealed with a natural cork and a white closing seal, keeping the contents secure whether the urn rests on a shelf or is picked up and held.
The craft behind every painted detail
Royal Delft has been producing hand-painted Delftware since 1653. That is not a marketing line. It is a traceable tradition of skill that you can see in every brushstroke on this urn.
How the hand-painting process works
Decoration begins with contours applied in charcoal. From there, the panel painters work freehand, using fine brushes made from marten and squirrel hair to build each detail. The paint is water-based, and colour gradations come from adjusting how much water is mixed in. The blue itself starts as something quite different: the design is painted in a cobalt oxide mixture that appears almost black before firing. During the kiln process, chemical reactions transform it, beneath the glaze, into the distinctive deep blue that Royal Delft has been known for since the seventeenth century.
The symbolism of the bird, considered
A bird in flight represents letting go while holding on to what matters. If the person you are remembering followed their own path, pushed against limits or gave others the freedom to do the same, this image is not a cliché. It is an honest reflection of who they were. The bond you shared is what gives this decoration its particular meaning.
If you would like to take that a step further, Royal Delft offers the opportunity to work directly with a master painter to develop a bespoke design, shaped around a specific memory or wish. Please get in touch and we can talk through how that works.
Made for indoors, designed to be kept close
This keepsake urn is designed for indoor use and is well suited to life in a home. Glazed ceramic is durable and stable in everyday domestic conditions. Two things are worth bearing in mind: keep the urn away from direct, prolonged sunlight on a south-facing windowsill, and avoid rooms with persistent damp, such as a bathroom. In a dry, sheltered spot, the material will remain in excellent condition.
Sealing and security
The white closing seal and natural cork together form a secure base closure. The contents remain undisturbed even when the urn is lifted and held regularly. That is precisely what this cremation urn is made for: to be present in your daily life, close to hand whenever you want it.
If you would like help choosing a placement, discussing a bespoke design with Royal Delft, or simply have a question about the urn, we are happy to take the time to talk it through with you.
