A feather held in blue and white
A feather weighs almost nothing. What it stands for is another matter. Across many traditions, the feather has represented the soul continuing its journey, and what endures when everything else has grown quiet. The 'Feather' keepsake urn from Royal Delft gives that meaning a physical form: hand-painted ceramic in the blue and white that Royal Delft has made its own for more than three and a half centuries.
Hand-painted in a 370-year-old workshop
Royal Delft has been making Delft Blue since 1653, not as a printed pattern applied by machine, but as a craft passed from painter to painter across generations. Each piece begins with the contours sketched in charcoal. From there, the panel painter works freehand, using brushes made from marten and squirrel hair to build up the detail. The paint itself is water-based, and colour depth is achieved by adjusting how much water is mixed in, which is why no two pieces colour in exactly the same way. The design is painted in cobalt oxide, following recipes that are centuries old. During firing, that pigment transforms under the glaze from black to the distinctive blue. That shift is chemistry and patience made visible.
Something to keep close
The 'Feather' sits comfortably in the hand and comfortably in a room. It is sized to be present rather than prominent, and that is precisely where its quiet character lies. If you are looking for something that provides comfort without drama, this mini urn for ashes does exactly that. The organic form settles into a home interior naturally, neither demanding attention nor disappearing into the background.
Closure and the safety of the contents
The 'Feather' is sealed at the base with a white security seal and a natural cork. Once the urn is placed on display, the closure is not visible. The seal keeps the contents completely secure, and the cork provides a clean, discreet finish.
Designed for indoor placement
This cremation urn is made for indoor use. The glazed ceramic holds up well in a normal domestic environment, but it is not frost-resistant and should not be exposed to persistent damp. Keep it on a dry surface away from direct sunlight to protect the painted decoration over time.
The feather, and what it meant to you
The feather carries different things for different people: freedom, lightness, the particular way someone moved through life with an ease that was entirely their own. If that is part of what you remember about the bond you shared, the 'Feather' may feel less like a coincidence and more like the right choice. Royal Delft's designers approached each design in this collection with that personal dimension in mind.
Personalisation with a master painter
If you would like to personalise your urn further, Royal Delft offers the possibility of working directly with one of their master painters to develop a bespoke decoration. Whether that is a detail, a pattern or something that simply meant something to them, that conversation is available to you. Get in touch and we will talk through the options at your own pace.
