A bird caught between two worlds
Some losses are simply beyond words. This keepsake urn from Royal Delft's 'Bird in Paradise' collection offers something quieter than words: a handpainted presence you can hold, place, and return to each day.
Handpainted in a 370-year tradition
Royal Delft has been producing Delft Blue ceramic since 1653, and the painting process has not been simplified in the centuries since. Each piece begins with charcoal outlines, applied by hand. The painters then work the detail freehand using brushes made from marten and squirrel hair, with no template to guide them. The pigment, composed largely of cobalt oxide, goes on beneath the glaze as black. During firing, a chemical reaction transforms it into the deep, characteristic blue that makes Delft Blue immediately recognisable. That shift cannot be forced or faked. It is the result of generations of master painters refining their understanding of the process, and you can see that precision in every line on the 'Bird in Paradise'.
What the bird of paradise means here
The bird of paradise has long carried associations with freedom and flight, but also with something harder to name: a kind of existence that resists being pinned down or contained. Choosing this motif is a way of saying that the person you are remembering has not simply gone, but is present somewhere else. That is not a vague comfort. It is a specific image, visible in your home every day, that speaks to who they were and the bond you shared with them.
Made to last and to be kept close
The 'Bird in Paradise' has an organic, hand-held shape that sits naturally in the palm. The base cap is finished in plain blue with a natural cork seal, keeping the contents securely closed. This plain blue seal is specific to the 'Bird in Paradise' design and forms part of the overall piece.
For indoor use
This mini urn for ashes is intended for use indoors. Ceramic is sensitive to moisture fluctuations and significant temperature changes, so choose a dry, stable spot away from direct sunlight. Kept in the right conditions, both the glaze and the handpainted decoration will remain in excellent condition for many years.
A design made for one person
If you would like something beyond the existing collection, Royal Delft offers the possibility of a bespoke design. Your idea, a specific memory, a detail that mattered, can be developed in consultation with one of their master painters into a decoration that exists nowhere else. If you are looking for a cremation urn that reflects something particular about the person you are remembering, this is worth exploring. Get in touch and we can talk you through how the process works at your own pace.
